Your patients need to know that acute pain serves an important purpose. It informs them that his or her body is about to be—or has been—injured in some way.6
According to the National Pharmaceutical Council, you can define acute pain for your patients as the unpleasant feeling created by injury to the tissue. Additionally, explain that acute pain has many causes and may be due to illness, injury, or surgery. It can begin suddenly and last a short period of time—hours, days, or weeks—usually until the injured tissue heals.6,7
